Bigelow's Sneezeweed
Helenium bigelovii
Named for John Milton Bigelow, 19th century professor of botany.
The common name is "based on the former use of its dried leaves in making snuff,
inhaled to cause sneezing that would supposedly rid the body of evil spirits." (wildflower.org)
The insect is a Bee Fly, Hemipenthes sinuosa.
Natural, undistured habitats permit flora to mingle in a rather attractive messy way!
