for an unspecified herb from the Ancient Greek settlement of Thapsos,

Mullein - from Anglo-Fr. moleine (Fr. moulaine, perhaps from Fr. mol "soft.") ,
referring to the velvet texture of the leaves

Mullein is a biennial that produces a rosette of leaves in its first year of growth;
After flowering the entire plant usually dies at the end of its second year
