Mimulus aurantiacus
Phrymaceae (=Scrophulariacae)
The genus name is derived from the Greek mimos (imitator or mime);
little actor or comic, buffoon, for the clownish appearance
of the flower as you stare into the corolla.
There about 150 species are currently placed in the family Phrymaceae.
The genus has traditionally been placed in Scrophulariaceae. The removal of Mimulus
from that family has been supported by studies of chloroplast DNA.
aurantiacus - orange-red colored, but pale yellow is common in this area
M. aurantiacus likes to grow on rocky slopes
