for several plants before it came to mean
Egyptian white lotus (Nymphaea lotus),
a flowering plant of the family Nymphaeaceae.

[Taxonomists now recognize the genus as Acmispon]

corniculatus - small horns

The common names "Bird's-foot Trefoil" and "Birdfoot Deervetch"
unfortunately are also used with other lotus species.
