Common Ocotillo
Fouquieria splendens

This Garden has 8 of the 11 species of Ocotillo found in the southwestern US and Mexico.

The "spines" are really leaf midribs which stiffen when the leaf dries and falls off.
However, once the first leaf growth forms a midrib, subsequent leaves just dry and fall off
without forming another midrib in that location.
